I have a casual, relaxed approach in which I document what is transpiring versus trying to pose every situation. I apply the principles of classic portraiture to every session while capturing the spontaneous, special moments that just happen. When on location I follow children around and capture their natural expressions while exploring their surroundings. My goal is to create portraits that reflect the true personality of everyone involved and make the experience casual and fun. Children are most relaxed when everyone around them is relaxed and having fun. All of my sessions are considered custom portrait sessions. Each session is made by appointment and is thoroughly planned with you in order to create works of art that are individual to you and your needs. The session may be at your home, my studio or any outdoor areas in and around the Richmond area. My favorites are the U of R campus, Sunday Park, Dogwood Dell and lots of other area landmarks. Sessions may last 30 minutes or up to 2 hours, allowing time for infant feedings, kids snacks and just playing and getting comfortable with each other. Sessions are best if they aren’t rushed so everyone can feel calm and relaxed.

A few things to think about in planning for your session:
General rules for clothing – if one person in the group is wearing light blue, then the group should stick to pastels. If one person is wearing browns the group should stick to neutrals. White tops are popular, but white is not the best color for everyone. Think about what color you like on each person in the photographs and use that as your guide in deciding colors, etc. Jeans or sundresses and bare feet are always my favorite for casual portraits. For little ones not yet sitting up minimal clothing is best – I love a naked baby!
Jewelry is great, I do have an aversion to watches though. Unless it’s a sentimental piece I may ask that you remove it for your photographs.
Feel free to bring along anything that defines you and your family. Your family pet, a child’s lovey (although most lovies aren’t too “pretty”), an instrument, you name it. If there is something you want to look at in 20 years and remember, bring it along!
For little ones – any music that makes them happy or calm, special keepsakes (don’t forget the bracelet Grandma gave her when she was born!) and snacks are a must. Try to leave yourself lots of time to get ready and arrive at the session so everyone can be as relaxed as possible. Tell the kids you’re going to play with Miss Missy and hopefully this will all help in keeping everyone calm and happy!
